It's getting more hectic, time lines to rush, so many modules projects running concurrently.... etc etc.. In short, busier than the busy traffic jam in Orchard Road in the weekends.

Anyway, here's a article I read up in a modelling forum, really interesting read. Some food for thoughts.

Domestic Maids, Mas Selamat and Why Wong Kan Seng Should Be Fined
Pardon the slightly bizarre title of this post. In a roundabout way, it was inspired by the following article from Today:
2 years on, employers still skirt day-off clause
Should there be a law to get employers to comply?

Friday • April 25, 2008

NEWLY arrived, a maid asked her employer if she could get a rest day. Her employer was incredulous.

"If I wanted to give my maid a day off, I would have hired one from another country," said the employer, who had signed her up on the assumption that maids of some nationalities were more pliant than others.

Faced with an employment contract that requires them to either give their maids a rest day, or compensate them accordingly for working, some Singaporean employers have sought ways to get around the terms or extract the most from their workers.

And this begs the question of how much has truly changed for the 170,000 foreign domestic workers in our midst — two years after the industry association put together a standard contract requiring employers to give maids at least one day off a month.

A Today straw poll of 50 employers found that only 62 per cent gave their maids a rest day.

With some industry watchers criticising the rest-day clause as being too flexible, should legislation be put in place to mandate the issue? ....

There are several simple reasons why many Singaporean employers are reluctant to give their maids a day off.

You see, if the maid runs away, the government will fine the employer $5,000. If the maid commits a crime such as shoplifting, the government will fine the employer $5,000.

If the maid is caught having sex with someone, the government will fine the employer $5,000. If the maid gets pregnant, the government will also fine the employer $5,000.
(Oh, and you have to send your maid for a pregnancy test every six months).

If you didn't know any of the above, then either you do not employ a maid, or you didn't read the small print of the Manpower Ministry's work permit conditions.

Many employers are afraid that if their maid has a day off and gets into trouble, the employer will not only have to solve the trouble, but also have to fork out $5,000 as a free gift to the government.

(Not that the government will then help you solve the trouble. It's just a fine, plain & simple).

Intuitively, this smacks of gross unfairness. The employer gets punished not for something he did, but for something that somebody else (the maid) did. Furthermore, once the maid leaves the employer's residence, the employer has no way of monitoring where the maid goes and what she does there.

To encourage employers to give their maids a day off, the government needs to change these ridiculous rules.

I agree that employers should be fined and punished, if they fail to perform their responsibilities as employers - for example, paying the maid's salary on time; providing adequate food and accommodation; and ensuring a safe, secure working environment.

But employers should not be held responsible, for things that a maid may do, of her own free will. When the maid goes out on her rest day, the employer simply has no viable way to ensure that she will not do anything that breaches her work permit conditions.

(Which, by the way, are quite extensive and onerous).

We may draw a curious parallel with Mas Selamat's escape, and PM Lee's determined, if muddled, defence of Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng in Parliament.

Mas Selamat ran away. But PM Lee said that Wong Kan Seng was not at fault and should not be punished in any way. The reason being that Wong Kan Seng personally did not do anything which allowed Mas Selamat to escape.

Strangely, if your maid runs away, it IS your fault and you SHOULD be punished. Even if you did not personally do anything to let her run away (apart from giving her a day off).

Similarly, if your maid becomes pregnant, it IS your fault and you SHOULD be punished. Even if you did not personally do anything to make her pregnant.

Oh well. What can I say? Maids are not terrorists. But then you are not Wong Kan Seng. So the rules remain stacked against you. Wong Kan Seng gets off lightly, but you won't. Even if his lapse has far greater, and graver, implications than yours.

Your runaway maid wouldn't blow up Changi Airport, would she?

School has started for about 2 weeks plus now.

I would say its ok, except for the most part, timetable is really weird. There's also quite abit of problems with the grouping of some projects at first, although it was eventually solved... And then the FYP project, which seems like its really moving slowly compared to other groups. And the dreaded calculations that is coming back to haunt me after 3 years.

More formulas to deal with, more projects to deal with. I need to persevere on, its the final leg of the race.

And today is Ben & Jerry free cone day~ Got Chunky Monkey... Initially thought its chocolate flavour cos I mixed it up with another flavour, some weird banana flavours instead... Nevertheless, its free, cannot complain.

Saw this in Carrefour just now, I gotta say, one of the worst and most stupidest marketing tactics ever.

5+1 You know! Usually we pack into 5 cans one ok! We give you free one more leh! FREE!

ABSOLUTELY NOT HIDDEN CHARGES OK!

You don't get this deal ANYWHERE! GRAB IT HERE NOW!

Whoever did this marketing tactics should be dragged to hang and shot and dragged to hang and shot and.... you get my drift.

School's starting in 1 weeks time. Hmm, half anticipate, half not really wanting to go back to school that early.

Just in case why people ask I post in Chinese for the previous entries... well, I came from a Chinese speaking family, so I feel most comfortable posting in Chinese on things that I want to talk about on a more personal side. Also another fun way to blog in a sense.

Speaking of which, have to welcome 2 new additions to my life, firstly:

Baby Bugs~ the Green Bear is actually quite some time ago where I won from Escape Themepark during my birthday celebration. Baby Bugs is courtesy of the girlfriend~ The bug tooth is cute and looks like me, thats what she says anyway. Though I kinda agree. Haha... But its small, and not hugable, I probably can cover it with my arm cross over it. That's the only size they have though...

Is it me, or does baby version of cartoon characters looks much nicer?

Sony Ericsson Z770i Phone~ At $0 with a FREE Mcard and a GMask Voucher, it's well worth the deal, have ordered a customized pouch for it which is on the way and a 1Gb card which is already in the phone. And Im a sucker for clamshell designs, Im quite a rough person so this design appeal to me more.

I feel the design is really nice and unique, the only downpoint is the 2MP camera, which Im going to replace it with a full fledged camera soon. And it was the Walkman functions though its not part of the Walkman series. Good stuff.

哈哈。。。

3:32 AM

The results are out sometime back... I didn't do badly like what I think it was at all... infact, I did quite good... 3.6GPA... Felt good about it...

Just slotted my IS Modules, were in the same class as some of my classmates... hopefully more if possible... I still don't get the idea of IS modules when its like, most of the time you will be back to your own classmates if possible rather than complete strangers who might sabotage you and all.

Anyway, the timetable is out... sad to say, Jon and WenXiang are not in the same practicals as us... probably due to project selection late last year arrangement...

If you asked me, I didn't really like this arrangement, it sorts of pulls apart the group we used to have, I mean, we have "Late already, HURRY UP!" Jon, and "*imitates Jun Chen voice* "Har?!" Wen Xiang who have being with us for the whole school? It will definitely get some using to, without having their presence in the practicals, though we still see each other in lectures.

The timetable is also out, and it looks pretty confusing, even more confusing than our last term timetable, with the odd, even weeks lectures again... Guess this is because they are trying to squeeze everything into 1 sem so we can continue the other sem on just IAP...

School's starting soon...

At The Cathay on Thursday.

Vermonster, is a monster product of Ben & Jerry, or should I say, an attempt of cheating money through a legit way.

More information about the Vermonster here:

Vermonster consists of:
*Twenty scoops of ice cream, frozen yogurt, or sorbet (usually five scoops of four flavors or four scoops of five flavors)
* Four ladles of hot fudge
* Four bananas(slice and diced into the ice cream)
* Ten scoops of chopped walnuts
* One fudge brownie
* Three cookies
* Two scoops each of four different toppings
* Whipped cream

And at a price of $88.

Now that you ask me, its not worth it for one person, 2 persons, 3, or even 300 people eating it.

Why do I say that? First, there's different flavours for you to choose from. While each flavours taste nice by itself, when mixed together, and letting it melt and mixed, it tastes real weird, even if you tried to get flavours that complement each other... In the end, you are just eating mixed up things, and you don't even know what flavours you are eating anymore.

Enough talking and advertising it, some pictures:

Getting cosy and waiting.
Forget to mention something, all those who attended are my forum members, well, 5 of us, including me. It was suggested by Melon (the one in dyed blond back facing), to have this outing. It has being quite some time since I really did a gathering, not counting the other Sushi gathering which is very brief and fast and not much interactions. So this time, its really talk alot and eat alot. There's quite a bit of talking, current happenings and such. I took a ride on his RX-8, and we had quite a bit of conversation during that time, mostly about girlfriend, life, work, school... etc.

Of course, it also reminded me that it has being about almost 2 years since I started the forum, and leading these group of people. Quite alot have happen since then, members come and go, members married, having kids, army, moving on to next stages of life and me clicking on delete user key for about 3 or 4 times already on those hopeless cases.

And I still remembered from the old forum before this, where the administrator, at which time I had disagreements with which is shared by most members, saying very wicked things about me... Main point is to play me down and make me look like a complete loser. Doesn't help that its a foreign She. Of course, I sucked it up, and continued. And over the months, pushed for activities in the board. Of course, a few times there is clashes with some members, but nothing too big. In all, the former forum is non existant, and now, in my eyes, my forum is doing quite well. Of course, with the help of members postings, their presences is the key to survival of this small forum.

We talked quite a bit on things during the tackle of the monster:

At the start, and how it looks like from the top.

Towards the middle, there is about only 3 active eaters still tackling, me included. By that time, its really "you know you are eating, but you don't know what you are eating" And it didn't help that there's half more to clear.

Me trying to tackle it all, with my friend looking on and urmm, trying not to vomit due to over eating.
Having survived the 5 hours eating feast at Seoul Garden before with my primary school friends, this is another attempt at eating something gigantic... Towards the end, most of them have given up, leaving me the only person to tackle the last quarter... Of course, slow and steady, I eat it slowly, we also discovered waffles at the bottom, which is surprisingly, a bonus, and of course, ice at the bottom to keep it cold.

Of course, I came on a really empty stomach. I didn't eat anything in the morning, and so I can eat alot. Plus the fact that I do like to eat ice cream, it didn't really slow me down, and also to the fact that Im paying $17 for it, DIE DIE ALSO MUST EAT.

The Vermonster, conquered at 2hrs+. Not a record, but certainly quite fast enough. The last few are just ice and residues, cannot eat at all.

My verdict for it? Don't bother trying, but for the fun and the company of friends, ya.

After which, we parted, I went with my friend (the one in Grey shirt) to Aljunied, (under severe persuasions and nudgings) for his monthly fire safety checkups.

We went to the industrial area where he is posted to check monthly by the management over there, something like an Arborists who is required to check the conditions of the tree once per 3 months and all.

His tasks is to check the fire lifts, risers, and pipes of the risers, for any rustings or misuses. And also the main corridor where its shared among tenants, ensuring that no blockages, otherwise it would be consider fire hazards.

It was quite an experience, there's 2 buildings to inspect, and the first building had quite a few problems. Mainly from storing Computer Monitors, Mirrors to even Official Documents in at least 10 or 12 cartons of boxes in the risers... It really surprises me. There's also very obvious signs of misuses, probably from those workers who took out the pipes (which is suppose to be used when there is a fire) to wash floors, clothes, or whatever things they feel like washing. There's also bad doors and rusting and leaking pipes which can hamper the fire fightning process

One thing I find that is his job is really a thankless job, something like what we in the future will be doing (HLM).

On the second floor of the first building, half of the common corridor was filled with items, from cardboards to metals supports, according to my friend, it has being there since last week, and it hasnt' being removed. He went in and talked to the respective companies which causes the lag, of course, they seem offended, and irritated. One even asked him who he is in a very rude manner. Of course, my friend has a much better temper than me, and he told them nicely. Im not sure how well I can handle it, but if the same shit continues for months like what he said, I would have personally set fire to burn the damn place when it is at peak hour and see how they run out instead of calling SCDF to come down to check and fine them accordingly.

One company even said these items are just empty boxes and can be removed within 5 mins.

"If so, why don't removed it now and wait till accidents happen?"

I didn't said that to the company as I don't want my friend to get into trouble. Im just an observer to things, not an inspection manager. An interesting to note is that this is the first time I knew that those red pipes are actually SCDF pipes and should not be used to hang things, like what one company is doing by hanging 2 red lanterns on the pipes

The second building has lesser things to talked about, but still quite a bit of problems. After all the inspections are over, we went back to the guardroom, where he brief the security so that they can let the management know, quite a simple process which takes about 1 hour plus.

Quite an experience for me... And pretty much to say, his job is quite important, but its thankless, nobody thanks you for what you are doing, but when shit happens, you are the first to get it.

After which, we headed to Old Kallang Airport, where we had some fish soup for me, and his errr tasting weird fish and chip from China store.

A few days ago, I had dinner with my girlfriend at parkway where she ordered a Chicken ramen from China stall, where she loses her appetite after a while, I thought she's not feeling good or something and when I eat her ramen, I also knew why she don't feel like eating.

It's a "ramen" with magi mee as the noodles. WTF is this. And the chicken don't even taste like chicken. And the soup is from some magi mee, which tasted exactly like what Myoji that brand of instant noodle soup base is.

Seriously, I cant imagine 5 years down the road we are eating this kind of hawker fare.

Went upstairs to take a look...after the early dinner to take a look since I have never been upstairs after the renovations. Quite deserted actually. But it has this kind of old school feel to it... Kinda like when I was small and my mother brought me to those dry market to look around.

Good memories~

Oh yeah, its being a long time since I update...

Yes, LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time.

I still do blogsurf around, but not updating, so its not surprising when people goes "OMG YOU SURF MY BLOG?" when they think apparently, Im not you know, updating. So probably, the thinking comes right there.

And so, the updated list of friends I have put, if you are not here, 3 reasons:
1.)I lost your link, or you shift your blog already.
2.)You went MIA with years of entries not updated.
3.)You password your blog, and you expect me to get in?

The 2 reasons Im not updating:
1.) Nothing much to update/ just lazy
2.) Everytime I wanted to update, I always had something in the back of mind going... should I even be updating when I had so much things going on?

So, to compensate for the lack of updates, I shall go WAY BACK to December, exactly at the time when I started to get really busy...

November 2007:

First Day:
The start of the I&E selling, after all those problems with the manager, we finally got to the day itself. We were busy setting up stall for the first time for most of us, trying to think how to arrange the item so as to make it look appealing. It was hard, in the end, we change the position of the table so that it looks more spaced out than it was. It was the worst day ever for most of us. We were mostly swatting flies and all for the whole day. Literally. By the end of the day, we only sold 2 miserable items. YES 2.

We had a few who are interested, and they say they would come back tomorrow. You know, "tomorrow"

That's more than enough to kill all of our hopes.

I wasn't there when they were closing because I had to rush off to collect the goods, but then, if Im there, I can also feel the disappointment.

Second Day:
The Business finally picked up, set up right after our class, and we got into quite abit of business, we had people trying to buy, and we actually sold quite alot of things, and eventually ran out of some stocks. I even managed to sell of 2 of our store's most expensive items. About $400 plus together, that's really... Whoa. So in order to replenish the goods, I went off early again, to get goods, no choice. But in the end I only managed to get 1 color, cos they equally ran out as well.

Third Day:
The last day of our store, business slowed down a little, but not too much, again, we sold out some colours of the CK1, and had to take preorders for the colors. Close the shop at about 5plus, before doing stock checks, had a few small problems but resolved in the end.

Over the weekend, went back to Jaben and get more goods, much to the displeasure of my gf, haha. distributed the goods on school day and managed to sell some more of the goods to lecturers.

December:

The Girlfriend Birthday:
It was kinda hard trying to plan for her birthday, because it falls right around the period where Im having my common tests. So the double stress are there. I remember planning with her friends at that time, trying to arrange and get things settled, mostly one man show with a few help from friends here and there.

The need to keep it a surprise was there, I wanted her to not know. Wanted it a surprise for her, and so her friends had to put up an act pretending that they are not joining her for her birthday. All was going well. Until she know.................

What let the cat out of the bag, she went to my forum using my name and pass, and surf the forum, bad decision. Cos I posted a topic about it, asking the location of the BBQ pit. She called me asking me about it.

Worse decision she made again, at that time I was studying, if Im not wrong, when I knew that, she got scolded from me, badly. Really badly, maybe because there's pressure of studying and juggling the birthday celebration, but when she knows, it kinda spoiled it all. She cried, and then I still didn't stop scolding, maybe because Im too angry to do that. Of all times to look, she choose to go in at that time. It was equally bad for me to do that... After a while, I cool down, and apologise to her. It wasn't on deliberate...

After that incident, on that day itself, brought her to the area, the problem is that day the dark clouds are closing in, it was going to rain, and the plan is to BBQ. And it didnt help that the past few days, it was raining heavily. All the while I was worried about the rain, and inside my mind, I was silently swearing, if it ever rains, I will freaking murder you. (You as in heaven)

Luckily it didn't rain, but the area there is bad, there's alot of floodings, and my BBQ pit happens to be on that kind of area, dirty and all. But that didn't stop us from starting the BBQ, got the food and start cooking and all...

Had a fun night that time, but unfortunately, had to take a cab home to her house because the bus is not moving, sent her home and went home myself with the BIG BOX of cooked food.

Well, at least she enjoyed herself.

My Birthday:
I got a cake on my birthday, not just any cake, but a cake made by my GF, haha, it was sweet of her to do that, in case anyone havent seen it:

And it taste as good as it looks~ Haha, not doubting her skills here, since she does made cakes. Appreciate her efforts for making it.

Went out with her on my birthday to Escape theme park, to say the truth, first time… Seriously, I mean, my parents are not those thrill seeking types and also my friends usually don’t go there, at least my clique of friends in Secondary School, so ya, I didn’t go to Escape.

It was quite, except that it rained a little. Had a go at go kart, but my gf wasn’t really happy, cos she wanted more thrill… I swear my thrill factor is not there, some rides for me are just plain asking my heart to jump out and say hi to me. Managed to get a teddy bear for myself, kinda cute, and it wore green shirt, haha, except that the feet looks…. Deformed. Also got wet, thanks to my girlfriend for forcing me to take the logride... Had dinner at Food of Republic, nice food and nice ambience, and the people are fast in refilling, at least to us… It was a fun night to both of us~

Countdown:

I don’t really like going crowded places, and somehow, me and my girlfriend have come to a stage where going to fireworks, crowding and squeezing with those people are not worth it. It was bad when you see people, not local, trying to get some fresh meat, and pushing around. I got pissed at these group of people, because obviously, they are not caring about other’s safety, so without any choice, when they pushed towards us, I pushed them back as much as I can, I think I knocked down a few when I really you know, exert my strength, but I don’t care, because you are trying to body surfing in a very crowded place without regards of safety. After the fireworks, sent her friend to her cousin area before going home, on her father’s car.

January:

The whole of January, I think most of us HLMers go ARGHHHHHHHHHH. Why, it’s the dreaded project that began since the start of the module, some go last minute, so started way beforehand, either way, when the project is coming to a close, so does the pressure to complete is.

Of course, to push on, the need for good and cooperative project mates is there, well, I had a group of them.

Due to the need to complete the project under the deadline, we had to camp out at each other house, at first at Mark’s house, did some work, but not too much to you know, actually called it something. Had talks and fun, and pizza, haha.

During a few week before the presentation, we stayed back after school to really work on the project, our favourite spot at the library, under “Mr Chow” look alike poster, of course, a lot of hours are spent in the library, and of course, with the stagnant atmosphere, we have to make jokes, we are lucky that we didn’t get chased out by the librarians. So whenever we got bored, we make stupid jokes, mostly lame ones.

We stayed at Jon’s house next, it was a more productive one, because we really worked it out, of course, we catch the second and last episode of Golden Path together, haha. More talks went about, admist the jokes.

After completing it, we had to scan everything, again, at a certain stall which charge price according to your face. So if they like your face, -20% off, if not, +80%. Of course, when they open the price about the scanning which is completely wrong, we refuse to pay it, and after some negotiations, they agreed. We have to went back a second time, and of course, its not good, because this time, different pricing again, and they refused to budge, until the manager came, so after some talkings, we settled it.

Since we were there, its also good that we go shop around for CNY clothes, it was the first time we did shopping together, and of course, Mark’s unhappy because we are wishy washy. Haha.

Well to me, it have to look good before I really spend my money…

Had dinner at Ikea.

So the real presentation came, we decided to wear full formal, and its really full formal, including the business type of shoes. It was good experience. Came into some last minute problem at that time, but it was solved.

Of course, I still had some memory of the last failed disaster presentation in year 1. It was very bad, only 10 mins and there’s almost nothing you can present about. Didn’t help that this is the second part of the module.

Luckily, the teacher didn’t impose any time restrictions, so ya, not so bad. The presentation went very well I would dare say. All of us really gave it our shot.

Through this project, I somehow really feel bonded with the team mates, and it has being one of the best project I worked on, knowing everyone is working together and really hard at it. And the staying over + crapping and joking really makes the day. If there is ever a chance to do a project with them, I would definitely say yes.

Feburary:

The start of Chinese New year, which also mean, cleaning up of my room, to clear up all that mess after my project and before exams… is really bad. I always heard of people saying my room looks like it just being through world war 3, but LOOK at mine before you say so again:

Its that bad huh, mine being through the universe war. Of course, it took me quite some time to pack everything, and I was going to take a picture, until my parents feel that its good to put the CNY goods into the newly vacated place.

Also in the picture is that you see comics laying about. These are my source of relaxation and new ideas. I would always picked them up and read them, and sometimes, my idea came from the book itself… My last count of comic books? 300 plus. But I have stopped buying for a long time, because they are getting expensive to maintain.

Chinese New Year is so-so, somehow, I don’t feel the vibes anymore… maybe due to all the inflation that is going on, and the vibes is not there? And add to the fact that I had no relatives to visit, so no point going around celebrating CNY other than my family and my GF.

Then came Valentine’s Day…

Due to the need to study for exam, we had to move the date up, went to eat Manhattan Fish Market, under her suggestion, Seafood Platter for 2. It was good food, really nice food, almost burst our stomach trying to finish it up. And walked back to Suntec from Plaza Sing and sent her home.

Spent the next few days studying and Valentine’s Day too. Kinda sucked you know, when you are studying knowing couples out there are celebrating this day? At least Im at home so Im not so bothered by it. Of course, came a nice surprise when my girlfriend make a surprise visit and gave me fondule cake from Beard Papa.

Of course, there’s supposed to be 2, and white frosting on the top(Which has melted overtime), my girlfriend took the other one. She came to my house to bai nian at the same time. Spend some time studying with her before she went home, by herself, feeling a bit bad because she insists me not sending her home, but at least I get to study with the time I had.

Then came the exams, it was one of the most intensifying period we had, really get down and study, especially the last paper, of course, it was hard, but we managed to get through it finally… Now to get back to what I have missed out, for example, start preparing for NAFA for the run, modeling model kits, go out, have fun, and work………….. etc.

Though before I go, I was looking through my pictures and I discover this picture, well 2 years back if Im not wrong. Just for you guys to see:

Hmm, rebond hair, highlights… And looking thinner… Heh. I look just like a street punk. Well, at least its good memories.
